Advancing Digital Traceability in Cameroon\u2019s Cocoa Sector <\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

The\u00a0joint visit by the Head and Deputy Head of German Cooperation in Cameroon, Knut Gummert and Katrin Friedrichs-Peusmann\u00a0marked a milestone in\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>long-term collaboration<\/span><\/b>\u00a0between Cameroonian institutions and German development cooperation in the field of\u00a0<\/span>digitalisation and traceability\u00a0in the Cameroonian cocoa value chain<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

As part of this partnership,\u00a0<\/span>the National Cocoa and Coffee Board (ONCC)<\/span><\/b>\u00a0received IT equipment to support the deployment of a digital system for\u00a0monitoring\u00a0the commercialisation of cocoa. The ONCC will host the servers and\u00a0operate\u00a0the system, while GIZ financed the development of the application and the equipment for\u00a0<\/span>eight<\/span>\u00a0regional offices. This shared effort aims to make market flows more transparent and efficient,\u00a0ultimately contributing\u00a0to fairer and more sustainable trade.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

At the same time,\u00a0<\/span>the Interprofessional Cocoa and Coffee Council (CICC)<\/span><\/b>\u00a0received\u00a0<\/span>georeferencing data covering an\u00a0additional\u00a026,000 cocoa plots and producers<\/span><\/b>, collected between 2024 and 2025. This contribution complements the CICC\u2019s broader effort to geolocate over\u00a0<\/span>140,000 producers nationwide<\/span><\/b>, each linked to a unique digital identity and mapped parcel(s). Together, these datasets\u00a0mark\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0milestone towards\u00a0<\/span>compliance with the\u00a0<\/span>EU Regulation on Deforestation-Free Products (EUDR)<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\n\t\t\t\tGeolocating producers is more than a technical exercise \u2014 it\u2019s about giving every farmer a digital identity and a place in a more formal economy. This is key to building a sector that is both competitive and fair.\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Digitalisation, however, is not an end in itself. While progress has been significant, key challenges remain – <\/span>for example<\/span>\u00a0in linking\u00a0<\/span>digital traceability<\/span><\/b>\u00a0with\u00a0<\/span>land rights documentation<\/span><\/b>. Many smallholders still cultivate on customary land without formal recognition, creating potential bottlenecks for legal verification under the EUDR.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Through these joint initiatives, the\u00a0<\/span>German Cooperation and the European Union<\/span><\/b> reaffirm their commitment to supporting Cameroon\u2019s partners in modernising agricultural value chains. Digital tools, when co-owned and co-managed by national institutions, are not just technological upgrades – they are instruments of <\/span>sovereignty, sustainability, and inclusion<\/span><\/b>.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The European Union’s Sustainable Cocoa Programme\u00a0(SCP)\u00a0in Cameroon is part of the EU Sustainable Cocoa Initiative (SCI), co-financed by the BMZ and the European Union and\u00a0implemented by all partners, namely the\u00a0<\/span>European Forest Institute<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0(EFI),\u00a0<\/span>the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>(FAO), the\u00a0<\/span>Gesellschaft f\u00fcr\u00a0Internationale\u00a0Zusammenarbeit<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0(GIZ) and the\u00a0<\/span>Joint Research Centre<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(JRC) of the\u00a0<\/span>European Union<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
