2026 is the International Year of the Women farmer\u00a0<\/span>coined\u00a0<\/span>by the United Nations. As\u00a0<\/span>Women farmers are central to food security, nutrition and economic resilience<\/span>, the UN<\/span>\u00a0will spotlight the essential roles women play across agrifood systems, from production to trade<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

With these five portraits we aim to show the dignity and reality of women cocoa farmers<\/strong>, that\u00a0SAFE Indonesia<\/strong> works together\u00a0with\u00a0Mondel\u0113z\u202fInternational, Guan Chong Berhad, SNV,<\/strong> as well as actors like\u00a0<\/span>Wahana Visi Indonesia<\/i>\u00a0<\/i>(World Vision Indonesia)<\/strong>\u00a0to support\u00a0equitable\u00a0approaches.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

They belong to a women-only\u00a0Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA)<\/strong> in the village of\u00a0Tompi\u00a0Bugis, Central Sulawesi<\/strong>, that was founded in\u00a0April\u00a0<\/span>2025<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The group consists of 20 mem<\/span>bers with total\u00a0savings\u00a0more than USD 730 in a cycle<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Such groups allow members to pool their\u00a0savings, and\u00a0provide members with credit from their collective balance. This provides members with financial stability and a safety net<\/strong> and means, for example, that they can purchase inputs for their cocoa farms when prices are\u00a0favourable, rather than\u00a0on the basis of\u00a0when they have cash to hand.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Ite Nuria<\/strong>, 56, heads of the VSLA group, her role is to organize and lead the discussion. A cocoa farmer herself, widowed, when asked, she sees the weather changes as an obstacle: \u00abWhen one wants to fertilize, there is no rain\u00bb. She recognizes the importance of the forests: \u00abForests are the lungs of the world, some of our trees are considered sacred, holy.\u00bb<\/span><\/p>

When asked what she would like people around the world to know about their lives she answered:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Hanawia Attung<\/strong>, 61, is one of the three key keepers, widowed, with two adult children, manages the farm and household on her own. The cocoa farming supports her children getting a good education, one of her sons goes to college in Java.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

When asked about challenges, she sees the volatile cocoa prices. She is grateful that there are many organizations supporting communities in Central Sulawesi, that give her motivation.<\/span><\/p>

Her parents were already cocoa farmers, she is very proud to be a cocoa farmer:<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Ratih<\/strong>, is a housekeeper, with 5 children, and supports the family farm. <\/span>The obstacles she sees are dying seedlings and challenges in the weather, too much rain.<\/span><\/p>

Siska<\/strong>, 29, works in the village office<\/span>, her<\/span>\u00a0family has a 1 ha cocoa farm<\/span>, she<\/span>\u00a0helps her parents with drying the cocoa and selling it at the buying station<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>She notices the seeds of the cocoa getting\u00a0<\/span>smaller, and<\/span>\u00a0lower prices and hopes to get access to better seedlings and training.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Jumsia<\/strong>, an elementary school teacher, 43, is one of the notetakers for the financial report, she has three sons. When the group started in April 2025, she says the minds were opened to financial literacy, to save the money, separate the money for education and cocoa farms, to invest and for emergency funds.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
