Women disproportionately work in the informal sector of agricultural value chains, or their work is attributed to male heads of households who are socially accepted as \u2018farmers\u2019 where women are \u2018farmers\u2019 wives\u2019. Their work arrangements are often irregular, informal, part-time, low-skilled, and labour intensive, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation and discrimination. Despite this, women\u2019s contributions are inextricable from agricultural value chains which are imperative to the livelihoods of women worldwide.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-06fd62a elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"06fd62a\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;jet_parallax_layout_list&quot;:[]}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-d0589f6\" data-id=\"d0589f6\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bb85fde elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bb85fde\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Together with CIFOR-ICRAF the <strong>Sustainable Agriculture in Forest Ecosystems (SAFE)<\/strong> Project works on a training of trainers module for actors at the beginning of value chains to make their work more sustainable and inclusive. In response to these challenges, the <strong>Gender Equity and Social Inclusion Training of Trainers (GESI+ ToT<\/strong>) was held from April 23 to 25 in Altamira, Brazil. The workshop gathered 37 representatives from local partner institutions, farmers\u2019 cooperatives, municipal government agencies, and the private sector.<\/p><p>The training aimed to build technical capacities for integrating gender equity and social inclusion into sustainable agricultural development\u2014particularly within cocoa and livestock value chains\u2014while addressing the compliance demands of the <strong>European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)<\/strong>. Over three days, participants engaged in intersectional analysis, explored regulatory frameworks as tools for inclusion, and co-developed strategies to support smallholder farmers.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-8eaf149\" data-id=\"8eaf149\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8056ba4 elementor-alert-info elementor-widget elementor-widget-alert\" data-id=\"8056ba4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"alert.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-alert\" role=\"alert\">\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-alert-title\">Cattle and Cocoa production in Brazil<\/span>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-alert-description\">Brazil has the highest deforestation rate globally, primarily due to cattle ranching, which saw cattle numbers rise from 2.2 million in 1970 to 48.5 million in 2017. The industry is highly masculinized, with women mostly in supportive, unpaid roles, and People of Colour facing lower access to resources and smaller farms. Education level impacts farming productivity and income, disadvantaging women and People of Colour. Land tenure is a major barrier to productivity for marginalized communities, with property size distinctions between men, women, and racial groups.\nBrazil is the 5th largest cocoa-producing country, mainly from Par\u00e1 and Bahia. Cocoa production involves family farmers and sharecropping, with men in high-value commercial crops and women processing cocoa into products for local markets. Women contribute to all production activities but are considered \u2018helpers\u2019 and rarely targeted for interventions or trainings. Participants used interactive frameworks to analyze how traits traditionally associated with men, such as dominance and emotional restraint, can shape leadership and decision-making in agricultural systems. Meanwhile, stereotypes portraying women as caregivers or detail-focused were examined for how they affect women&rsquo;s roles in production and trade. Emphasis was placed on scalability, with discussions on replicating the workshop&rsquo;s outcomes through community-level training and institutional capacity building. They appreciated the flexible and relatable presentation of concepts, the sharing of ideas about gender, and the proficiency gained in using tools for value creation and risk mitigation. They felt better prepared to share their enhanced knowledge with others and gained new insights into value chain development and engaging with producers.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>As the training will be piloted further and lessons learned are implemented in the upcoming trainings, suggestions for improvement included increasing the number of applicable tools, allocating more time for discussions and questions, deeper exploration of topics, and the involvement of more farmers and government officials for discussions on land regularization. By pairing <strong>gender analysis<\/strong> with <strong>regulatory frameworks<\/strong> like the EUDR, participants discussed solutions that promote both environmental integrity and social justice.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Ultimately, the GESI+ ToT in Altamira strengthened local capacity, deepened institutional collaboration, and reaffirmed the vital role of inclusive planning in achieving long-term sustainability for Brazil\u2019s cocoa and livestock sectors. <strong>The next workshop will be piloted in Ecuador \u2013 from August 5<sup>th<\/sup> to 8<sup>th<\/sup> in Coca, Orellana \u2013<\/strong> focusing on the cocoa and coffee sectors.<strong> Another pilot in Indonesia is planned in September 2025<\/strong>, with more details to come<strong>. <\/strong>These initiatives present promising opportunities to scale inclusive, resilient value chains that meet both social and environmental goals.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Women are present in all stages of global value chains, but their contributions are mostly invisible and under-appreciated.
