\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Forests breathe life into our planet, they sustain water, soil, and climate, nourish bodies withfood and medicine, and shelter countless species, including us humans. For millions of people, forests are also sources of livelihood and belonging, providing various products that sustain families and entire communities. For many Indigenous communities, forests are sacred homes, sources of identity, knowledge, and dignity. \u200b<\/strong><\/p>

Yet across the world, forests are under strain, caught between conservation demands, encroaching agriculture and the daily realities of those who depend on them for survival.\u200b<\/strong><\/p>

The following exhibition explores the tension between human livelihood and forest preservation -between global consumption and local experience. Through the stories of farmers and guardians of the forest in Indonesia, Cameroon and DR Congo, we are invited to recognize our shared humanity and responsibility to honor the human dignity at the heart of the beginning of the value chain.<\/strong>\u200b<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The exhibit features images of three implementing countries of the GIZ SAFE project, with most of the photos taken <\/span><\/span><\/span>between August and October 2025 and is part of the Team Europe Initiative on Deforestation-free Value Chains.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

About the Artist<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Nyani Quarmyne<\/a> is a freelance photographer whose work\u00a0<\/span>centres<\/span> on global health, social justice,\u00a0<\/span>and environmental issues. He is drawn to \u2018One Health\u2019 themes – stories that remind us that the <\/span>wellbeing of humanity, our planet, and all its biodiversity must be seen as intrinsically connected.<\/span>\u200b<\/p>

Nyani has worked with a range of internationally\u00a0<\/span>recognised<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>organisations<\/span> and publications on topics\u00a0<\/span>ranging from famine in the Sahel to grassroots connectivity efforts in rural Kyrgyzstan. His personal <\/span>projects include work on climate change, snakebite envenomation, antimicrobial resistance, and the <\/span>illegal importation of \u2018bushmeat\u2019 from the African continent into Europe.<\/span>\u200b<\/p>

Multi-ethnic and having lived on five continents, Nyani\u2019s background and international worldview <\/span>profoundly shape his photographic perspective. He is based in\u00a0<\/span>Germany, but<\/span> is in many ways most at\u00a0<\/span>home on the move. The SAFE project in Cameroon is <\/span>supporting cocoa and coffee <\/span>growers with technical <\/span>assistance, intensifying <\/span>traceability systems and <\/span>promoting reliable and stable <\/span>partnerships. Amongst various <\/span>work streams it aims to improve <\/span>economic outcomes and EUDR <\/span>readiness amongst small-scale <\/span>cocoa growers, including <\/span>indigenous groups like the Baka <\/span>people, by countering <\/span>stereotypes and gender <\/span>discrimination; strengthening <\/span>leadership capacity, improving <\/span>access to knowledge and <\/span>addressing exclusion from <\/span>growers\u2019 cooperatives.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

When the <\/span><\/span>forest park was established in <\/span><\/span>1998, the farmers and the <\/span><\/span>Department of Forestry began <\/span><\/span>working together to find a balance <\/span><\/span>between conservation and <\/span><\/span>farmers\u2019 needs. The area is now <\/span><\/span>classified as a \u201csocial forestry\u201d <\/span><\/span>zone, in which the community may <\/span><\/span>farm in agroforests and harvest <\/span><\/span>non-timber forest products such <\/span><\/span>as natural rubber, cocoa, or <\/span><\/span>coffee, but may not cut trees or <\/span><\/span>cause further deforestation. <\/span><\/span>Thanks to the reforestation work, <\/span><\/span>water sources that were running <\/span><\/span>dry due to deforestation of the <\/span><\/span>slopes now serve farming <\/span><\/span>communities as well as the nearby <\/span><\/span>city of Bandar Lampung.
