Forests matter\u00a0<\/span>–<\/span>\u00a0for our planet<\/span>\u2019s health<\/span>\u00a0and for millions of livelihoods. Yet up to 90% of global deforestation is driven by the expansion of agricultural land<\/span>, while<\/span>\u00a0agricultural commodities such as coffee remain essential sources of income for\u00a0<\/span>many\u00a0<\/span>rural communities<\/span>\u00a0that often live in extreme poverty<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In Burundi, coffee is the country\u2019s most important export commodity.<\/strong> It accounts for\u00a0<\/span>nearly half<\/span>\u00a0of national export revenues and foreign currency earnings and supports the livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers. Balancing forest protection with economic resilience is therefore both a development and environmental priority.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Through the Sustainable Agriculture for Forest Ecosystems project (SAFE)<\/strong> in Burundi, funded by the European Union (EU), German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and the Dutch Foreign Ministry (BZ), and under the umbrella of the Team Europe Initiative on Deforestation-free value chains<\/a>, GIZ works with coffee supply chain actors and smallholder farmers to promote sustainable production practices, enhance livelihoods and protect forest ecosystems in compliance with the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)<\/strong> and enhancing the livelihoods of smallholder farmers.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In<\/strong> partnership with\u202fKahawatu\u00a0Burundi ASBL, the project supports more than\u202f2,000 coffee farmers\u202fin adopting sustainable agroforestry practices while increasing productivity.<\/strong> Practical field trainings\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0good agricultural practices, including soil conservation,\u00a0appropriate use\u00a0of lime, organic manure and mineral fertilizers, coffee tree\u00a0maintenance\u00a0and agroforestry. These farmer field schools take place on model plots, such as a 700-tree coffee farm owned by\u202fMarcel\u00a0Barengayabo, where farmers learn through hands-on demonstration. The visited plot stood out for its good maintenance, including adequate mulching, regular\u00a0pruning\u00a0and effective integration of agroforestry.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The project also supports the\u202f Consortium des\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>Coop\u00e9ratives<\/span>\u00a0des\u00a0<\/span>Caf\u00e9iculteurs<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(COCOCA)<\/strong>. To date, more than\u202f13,783 coffee farmers\u202fhave been geolocated, strengthening traceability and readiness for EUDR compliance<\/strong><\/span>, thus giving the farmers a better position in the value chain<\/span>. COCOCA members are also supported in achieving Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance certification. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

One of its member cooperatives, DUSANGIRIJAMBO<\/strong>, operates the Maruri washing station and demonstrates the tangible benefits of sustainable certification. Holding both certifications is a strong asset, signalling environmental protection, respect for human rights, fair remuneration and alignment with responsible market standards. For producers in Maruri, this has translated into greater economic stability and resilience. During the 2025 coffee campaign, the cooperative received a premium of 80.000.000 BIF, enabling farmers to earn 200 BIF more per kilogram. The cooperative also invests in community-benefit activities such as the maintenance of local roads and bridges.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Today, more than\u202f80% of COCOCA\u2019s coffee is exported to Europe. In Germany, it is available through <\/span>WeltPartner <\/span>eG <\/span><\/a>and <\/span>Tchibo<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Sustainable supply chains are not only about compliance. They are about protecting forests while securing resilient livelihoods for farmers \u2014 today and for generations to come.<\/strong><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

SAFE<\/a> works since October 2024 in Burundi.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>The<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>objective<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>to support the inclusive and\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>equitable<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0transition to sustainable coffee value chain in Burundi<\/strong>, particularly for smallholders, by scaling up agroecological practices, reducing risks in value chain, and attracting public and private investment in sustainable agri-food businesses. At the local level, SAFE\u00a0<\/span>provides<\/span>\u00a0training on Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs), especially soil fertility management, pruning techniques, shade trees & intercropping, and climate-smart farming to increase productivity and quality. The project promote<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0the intensification of\u00a0<\/span>agro<\/span>-ecological practices such as the use of organic fertilizers, bio-pesticides and shade crops and\u00a0<\/span>establishing<\/span>\u00a0farmer field schools (FFS) and demonstration plots to\u00a0<\/span>facilitate<\/span>\u00a0hands-on learning and peer-to-peer knowledge exchange and raising awareness about international coffee standards and EUDR compliance.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
