As countries and companies prepare for the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), the need for practical support goes beyond traceability and legal compliance. Ensuring that transitions to deforestation-free production are fair, inclusive and viable for the diversity of actors involved – particularly smallholders – is essential.\u00a0<\/p>

SAFE, in partnership with\u00a0<\/strong>CIFOR-ICRAF<\/strong><\/a>,<\/span>\u00a0has developed\u00a0a comprehensive<\/p>

Training of Trainers (ToT) Facilitation Toolkit on Gender Equity, Social Inclusion and Intersectionality (GESI+)\u00a0within Deforestation-free Value Chains<\/strong>.<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

It\u00a0supports\u00a0practitioners\u00a0and\u00a0programme teams working with producers and value-chain actors.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Moving beyond compliance\u00a0<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\u00a0Women produce\u00a0a significant share\u00a0of the world\u2019s food\u00a0yet\u00a0face systemic barriers to land,\u00a0finance, and decision-making.\u00a0Indigenous peoples and other marginalized groups, despite their key roles in food production and land stewardship, often lack formal land rights and\u00a0may\u00a0face conflicts from large-scale agricultural or extractive projects.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The GESI+ toolkit positions inclusion and intersectionality as core elements of sustainable\u00a0and deforestation-free value\u00a0chains. As EUDR\u00a0operationalisation\u00a0accelerates, upstream actors\u00a0–\u00a0particularly smallholders\u00a0–\u00a0face growing expectations related to traceability,\u00a0legality\u00a0and due diligence.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Supporting\u00a0smallholders in their diversity\u00a0requires approaches that recognise unequal starting points and differentiated capacities. The\u00a0toolkit\u00a0provides\u00a0practical methods to\u00a0identify\u00a0risks of exclusion, strengthen participation and\u00a0promote\u00a0fairer benefit-sharing across value chains.\u00a0Using an intersectional\u00a0lens,\u00a0considering\u00a0factors like\u00a0gender, age, ethnicity,\u00a0indigeneity\u00a0and tenure status,\u00a0it helps ensure that emerging market requirements do not unintentionally disadvantage vulnerable groups.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

By strengthening the social dimension of EUDR\u00a0operationalisation, the training protects\u00a0livelihoods, supports\u00a0resource\u00a0rights\u00a0and\u00a0promotes\u00a0more\u00a0equitable\u00a0participation in deforestation-free value chains.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Co-created and tested across three countries\u00a0<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The materials were developed through a\u00a0collaborative, iterative process with partners and practitioners.\u00a0Training pilots in Brazil,\u00a0Ecuador\u00a0and Indonesia in 2025,\u00a0brought\u00a0together representatives from government, civil\u00a0society\u00a0and the private sector. Feedback from these workshops informed the final\u00a0design, ensuring relevance across different institutional and\u00a0production\u00a0contexts.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The workstream produced\u00a0a global information brief\u00a0and\u00a0country-level assessments analysing value-chain dynamics, relevant national\u00a0legislation\u00a0and social safeguards for different identity groups in\u00a0producing\u00a0landscapes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The facilitation toolkit is designed for trainers working\u00a0directly with smallholder producers, small-scale value-chain actors, Indigenous\u00a0peoples\u00a0and local communities. These actors often serve as the bridge between operators,\u00a0traders\u00a0and producers in sourcing areas.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Rather than prescribing a fixed curriculum, the toolkit supports flexible adaptation to local contexts. It enables trainers to develop their own learning plans based on commodity,\u00a0geography\u00a0and institutional needs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
