SAFE in focuses on global level on digital public infrastructure, green financing solutions and inclusive capacity building, thus supporting the exchange of experiences and best practices for EUDR compliance.
SAFE facilitates knowledge-sharing and solution-oriented dialogues beyond country implementation in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Central Africa to promote cooperation and learning on sustainable, legal and deforestation-free supply chains. Through virtual and in-person formats, including field visits, trainings, and roundtables, these dialogues further collaboration and co-create knowledge.
Commodity:
cattle soy
Partners: Solidaridad Brazil, Tropical Forest Alliance, proforest
The aim of SAFE and its partners is to advance a co-creative environment by fostering collaborative efforts in the soy and cattle value chains and promoting a common understanding of and compliance with the EU Regulation on Deforestation-free Products (EUDR) in Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
The project’s ambition is to transition from localized efforts to regional dialogues, encompassing key stakeholders and facilitating a just and inclusive transition in the context of the EUDR. The target audience includes diverse stakeholders, with a strong commitment to the integration of smallholder farmers and a gender-inclusive approach.
Commodity:
coffee cocoa
Partners: Comunidad Andina, Al-Invest verde, European Forest Institute
In the Andean Community, SAFE contributes to the inclusive transformation towards legal, sustainable, and deforestation-free supply chains for products such as coffee and cocoa destined for the EU.
Through a series of exchanges on the role of the public sector and by active public sector advisory and training, SAFE facilitates the adaptation to the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) requirements in monitoring, legality, traceability and country positioning (co-leadership with AL Invest Verde/EFI), and enhances the capacities of smallholder producers to sustainably manage their production systems.
Commodities:
cocoa natural rubber palm oil
Partners: Indonesia Business Council for Sustainable Development (IBCSD), Tropical Forest Alliance (TFA), Secretariat Solidaridad Malaysia, Cocoa Sustainability Partnership (CSP), Partnership for Indonesia’s Sustainable Agriculture (PISAgro)
Through a co-creative environment, this project activity aims to support learning and the exchange of knowledge and experiences in a 2-year regional dialogue process with actors from the cocoa, natural rubber and palm oil value chains in Indonesia, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea.
SAFE will identify concrete challenges, curate best practices and approaches to guide companies and smallholders in the just transition of value chains in the context of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). The aim is to facilitate and to enhance the understanding of the requirements of the EUDR and their implementation.

SAFE is driving innovation by partnering with World Resources Institute (WRI), the Linux Foundation, FAO, the Forest Data Partnership (FDaP), the Aim4Forests programme and other key stakeholders to develop a digital public infrastructure (DPI) prototype. This infrastructure helps smallholder farmers and their organisations meet the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) requirements through open-access digital tools and standards. DPI integrates critical technologies such as field boundary mapping, forest monitoring, and traceability systems, making it easier for farmers to comply with regulations while fostering transparency and sustainability across agricultural supply chains.
SAFE focuses on bringing stakeholders together to establish geo-location standards and ensure systems interoperability for efficient traceability and forest monitoring. The project develops and refines solutions, such as a field boundary registry and data pipeline, to simplify deforestation checks and promote best practices. It implements these solutions in real-world settings, starting with a pilot in Indonesia, to provide scalability and ease of use.
One of the tools SAFE is developing with partners is Whisp (WHat IS in that Plot?), an open-source solution that helps to produce relevant forest monitoring information and support compliance with deforestation-related regulations. While there are numerous publicly available Earth Observation maps, the Forest Data Partnership (FDaP) and the AIM4Forests Programme promote a convergence of evidence approach where rather than relying on a single data set, stakeholders use multiple data sets together to capture nuanced information on a specific plot of land.
For more information on Whisp and how it contributes to deforestation-related decision making, watch the following video:

More InformationTowards a digital public infrastructure for deforestation-related regulations
In partnership with Climate & Company, a sustainable finance think tank, SAFE aims to mobilize financial resources, particularly for vulnerable groups, and enhance gender-transformative financial frameworks to support investments in deforestation-free value chains. This collaboration supports the implementation of the EU Deforestation-Free Products Regulation (EUDR) for non-EU producing countries, while fostering inclusive access to European markets.
In collaboration with the Centre for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry CIFOR-ICRAF, SAFE is developing a Training of Trainers program to address the impacts of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) in particular on vulnerable communities. The project’s aim is to shed light on how the EUDR could become a mechanism to support marginalized actors of specific value chains in an inclusive transition towards operationalisation of and compliance with the EUDR. This initiative endeavours to ensure that smallholders and marginalized groups are not left behind, while promoting inclusive and transformative practices.
This partnership strengthens inclusive policies and empowers local communities through knowledge sharing and capacity building. Key activities include analysing the EUDR’s implications on gender and intersectional communities, leading to the development of a white paper and training outline. To ease sustainable knowledge transfer, the project will create and pilot a training program for trainers, followed by three in-country workshops, webinars, policy papers, and training materials.
