The recent entry into force of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) represents a new challenge for meat-exporting countries. Uruguay, thanks to its mandatory traceability, its legal framework for forest protection, and its geography dominated by natural grasslands, is in a strong position to demonstrate compliance and maintain its status as a low-risk country for deforestation.
This report systematizes Uruguay’s situation in relation to the EUDR through an analysis of the country’s regulatory, environmental, and operational situation, including the views of public and private actors in the sector, and evaluating how existing systems enable compliance with the due diligence requirements demanded by the regulation.
