About the project

The Deforestation-Free Trade Gateway (DFTG) is a digital platform that helps producers, cooperatives, exporters and importers meet sustainability requirements like the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). It offers practical tools for data collection and deforestation risk analysis, putting SMEs at the centre to ensure their efforts are visible and rewarded.

MARKUP II

The EU–EAC Market Access Upgrade Programme (MARKUP II), implemented by the ITC in partnership with the East African Community, is a regional initiative funded by the European Union to promote sustainable economic growth by strengthening the competitiveness of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises and enhancing their access to regional and EU markets across key value chains such as coffee, cocoa and tea. The programme supports value addition, quality compliance, and export development while fostering an enabling business environment and regional integration. In addition, MARKUP II supports partner countries in preparing for the EU Deforestation Regulation, with a particular focus on coffee across all countries and cocoa in Uganda, including through awareness-raising, capacity building and practical readiness support.

Overarching Aim

The Deforestation-free Trade Gateway (DFTG) is a global public good designed to help businesses (especially SMEs) comply with emerging deforestation-related trade policies and regulations. Its overarching aim is to ensure that digital solutions used for data collection across supply chains are technically interoperable, that the data can be verified and made accessible to all relevant actors, while respecting data ownership and privacy. As a neutral platform, the DFTG bridges public and private systems, fosters transparency and efficiency, and empowers smallholders and local enterprises to be recognized and rewarded for sustainable practices, ensuring no one is left behind in the shift toward deforestation-free value chains.
