Kenya has launched its first coffee shipment prepared to meet the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), proving that sustainable trade can work for smallholder farmers and global markets alike. The consignment, bound for Poland, included 19 tonnes of coffee from 13 cooperatives.
The shipment shows how traceability and deforestation-free production can open access to the EU market while protecting forests. It also demonstrates that smallholder supply chains can meet new sustainability standards when the right support is in place.
This milestone was made possible through a multi-stakeholder collaboration involving the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, the New Kenya Planters Cooperative Union (NKPCU), the Global Coffee Platform, and the Kenya Coffee Platform, with support from German development cooperation through the DIASCA programme.
