The Sustainable Management of Native Forests in Uruguay’s Coastal Zone

This report is the basis for its development: it analyses the sustainable management of native forests in the coastal area of Uruguay, specifically in Paysandú, where the certification system’s pilot experience will be developed.

This report has been prepared based on an exhaustive analysis of the information obtained and compiled from the coastal zone’s native forests. To this end, primary instruments were designed and developed for the collection of fundamental information. After their analysis, the value chains of the productive sectors and actors involved in the certification system were identified and outlined.

The incentive systems in other Latin American and European countries were also analysed, as was Uruguayan legislation on incentives related to the productive sectors identified. This made it possible to recognise potential measures and actions for the definitive implementation of the system. Finally, the report proposes a preliminary version of the modular certification system, with a focus on the Directorate General of Forestry. This certification system is expected to contribute to both territorial economic development and forest preservation.
