Unpacking the EU Deforestation Regulation for the cocoa sector

This factsheet explains the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and its impact on the cocoa industry.

The EUDR mandates that companies ensure cocoa products imported into or exported from the EU are deforestation-free and legally sourced. It aims to reduce deforestation driven by agricultural expansion, with a focus on cocoa’s traceability and sustainability. The regulation applies to cocoa from regions classified by deforestation risk and requires varying levels of due diligence and GPS mapping to ensure compliance by December 2024.
