Building upon the knowledge product explaining the introduction of due diligence processes in the Ecuadorian cocoa value chain to meet the requirements of the EU Regulation on deforestation-free products (EUDR), this document describes the second step of the broader due diligence process: implementing diagnostic tools that assess organisational capacity, traceability systems, and risk management practices.
These tools help cooperatives understand how well they are prepared to meet EUDR requirements and where targeted support is needed.
Three main tools are introduced:
- a diagnostic to strengthen organisational structures and internal capacities
- an assessment of readiness for EUDR compliance, including data management and traceability
- a framework to identify risks and define mitigation measures related to deforestation, legality, and supply chains
Together, these tools examine areas such as governance, technical assistance, documentation, financial management, environmental protection, and human rights. They also support organisations in collecting geolocation data, improving internal control systems, and preventing the mixing of compliant and non-compliant products.
The publication shows that due diligence is not only about meeting regulatory requirements, but about strengthening producer organisations overall. By improving structures, processes, and transparency, cooperatives can better support farmers, manage risks, and position themselves as reliable partners in deforestation-free supply chains.
The document serves as a hands-on guide for practitioners, development projects, and producer organisations seeking to implement concrete assessment tools and move from awareness of EUDR due diligence requirements to practical action on the ground.
