Dialogue and Exchange of Experience on Sustainability in the Coffee Value Chain

This document highlights AL-INVEST Verde’s efforts throughout 2023 to establish dialogue and an exchange of experiences among Latin American coffee-producing countries regarding the main initiatives launched in the public sector to promote a sustainable coffee chain. Particular emphasis was placed on the implications of the challenges of the EU Regulation on Deforestation-free products (EUDR) in terms of sustainable production practices, traceability, georeferencing and geolocation, and due diligence systems.

After the first event in January 2023 in Rimini, at the 44th International Ice Cream, Confectionery and Bakery Exhibition (SIGEP), in which the main challenges currently facing the coffee chain were identified, a cycle of three virtual roundtables on priority topics was held. Participants included different sectors of the chain – the public sector, the productive sector, importers, etc. – mainly from the Andean countries (particularly Colombia, Ecuador and Peru) and Brazil (particularly the State of Minas Gerais). Central American and Caribbean countries participated as listeners. This cycle closed with an event organised on 13 and 14 December 2023 in Pitalito, Huila (Colombia).
