This case study follows the project “Strengthening Sustainable Coffee Value Chains in West Java” implemented in partnership by GIZ, ECOM Trading/PT Indocafco, and the Agricultural Agency of Bandung District. It presents a context of smallholder farmers operating in state forest area, prevalent in many parts of Indonesia, and their endeavours in increasing yields and incomes, strengthening farmer cooperation, and preparing for market access, all while preserving forest cover. Focussing on experiences and opinions shared by participating smallholder farmers, it sheds light on the questions: Which of the project’s interventions where effective and why? Where is still more support needed? And what should be the next steps? A resource to inform development and government partners, as well as actors involved in risk mitigation strategies.
