This factsheet explains the legality requirements of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) for products such as palm oil, coffee, cocoa, soya, cattle, timber and rubber. Operators must conduct due diligence to demonstrate that products are legally produced and deforestation-free, compiling evidence on traceability and compliance. The EUDR defines ‘relevant legislation’ in the producing country across seven areas: land use, environment, third-party rights, labour rights, free, prior and informed consent, human rights, and tax, trade, customs and anti-corruption. Due diligence is a dynamic, contextual and systematic process, and certification schemes may support, but not replace, compliance efforts.
